“Shit,” Finn swore when the sound of speakers cut out. “We need to get out of here. Get home.”

“He’s watching us,” I whispered, cold and shaking.

“No,” Oisìn snarled, trying to rip free. I tightened my grip on him and Finn did the same, stopping him before he could follow the direction of the sound and get himself killed.

“She’s in a coma,” I hissed at him, frantic. “She’s not dead. She’s alive, Oisìn. Alive.”

He stilled, glaring so hard I suspected it was to stop himself crying. “She’s going to die. He’s going to kill her.”

“He thinks he has the upper hand,” I whispered. “But we know where to find him. Tomorrow night. We’ll stop him. We’ll save your friend. I promise, Oisìn. Look at me.” I waited until his haunted green eyes met mine. “I promise.”

He shook his head, about to argue, or try to get away again, but my chest hitched and I realised I was about to cry. He realised the same, and stopped resisting.

“Please can we go home now?” I asked, pretending my throat wasn’t so tight my voice came out as a squeak.

Oisìn swallowed and nodded. I nearly collapsed in relief when he followed Finn along the road towards the Fair House.
